Four students in Southampton

Hello everybody,

Since Saturday we are back in Tyrol. It’s so nice to have our marvellous mountains back.
Our flight was very exhausting, but we all were looking forward to come home.

At Friday we had our presentation about “Healthcare: Funding&Management”. We all were very happy,when the presentation was over and the nervousness was away. For our presentations we were divided into free groups and in every group there were hold 4 different presentations.

After this hard work we all travelled together to the island HIKE. The trip was so nice, due to the fact that we travelled there with a ship over the sea. We enjoined our last get-together.

Thank you very much for this well organised two weeks in Southampton.

Good evening everybody

Now, we all are little bit nervous, because tomorrow we will hold our presentation "Healtcare: Funding & management". At the moment we are preparing the presentation because we are changing some parts of our topic, but this task won't last as a few minutes. And after that, I think we are perfect prepared!! Today's lectures was with Rebecca, who has told us some important parts of "holding a presentation" after that we had "business english" with Carolyn Westbrook and we learned about the stereotypes of different countries and cultures. In other words, we hold a meeting with f.e. japanese people etc (roleplay) ... it was very funny. In the afternoon, Collin told us about volunteer work in the sense of going abroad as a gap year.

Hello everybody!!!

Today we had "Applied Language Tasks" with Carolyn and we talked about "Housing in Britain". We had to read different articles and afterwards we had to make a case study called "Housing applications". The task was to applicate different types of flats to different people. These persons or families had all a different social background. Therefore the decisions were not very easy.

Now we are working on our projects, we are writing the bibliography, the power point presentation and a lot of other things.

Hello everybody

Today the whole team was very diligent, because we had to prepare lots and lots of information for our presentation on Friday. The morning lecture Julia Barton, "Head of Learning & Development" was very impressive, because she presented us, how the Healtcare Mangement in England is carried out. As a result we learned when and how the NHS was founded, how the departments of all sectors of the NHS work and also the manager's role in the Healthcare Management. Another very useful point for our project is, that Julia Barton has answered all our questions regarding to the NHS Trusts and the allocation of the Trusts.

This lesson was very interesting, because now we are ready to prepare more things for our presentation of Friday.!! ;-)

In the afternoon we had "Speaking and Communication" with Collin and we worked on the topic: "Life, death and paperwork". After reading the introduction of a short text, we had to make some interviews, where we had to play different personalities of the Healthcare sector. It was very funny and we learned a lot about the different persons from this sector.

Afterwards we had "self - directed work" and we used this time to work on our project.

Good evening altogether,

today it was a very exiting and marvellous day, but it was also a little bit exhausting. In the morning at 9 o'clock we travelled to Salisbury with Kevin. The travel tooked about 45 minutes. When we arrived at the "Philipps House" everybody was fascinated of this beautiful landscape and the old villa. First we had time to look around the building and then we had a presentation about "National Trust" and another presentation about the villa itself. At the our break we got some very good cookies and coffee.

After our visit at the villa we travelled back to Salisbury and we had the choice between a visit of this old city or to travel to the world famous "Stonehenge". Because of little problems with the bus, we decided to discover this old and nice city. We went to the big cathedral and lay in the sun in the beautiful park in front of the cathedral.

We travelled back to Southampton at half past 5 in the afternoon. Everybody was tired and it was a very silent and relaxed bus travel.

Afterwards we received the timetable for this week!

That you get some detailed impressions about our first week here in Southampton we have created a short timetable:

1. day:
- Welcoming: it was a very good organized presentation of Carolyn and we got some informations about the "Southampton Solent University" and about the city itself.
- we also had some other lessons in the Language Centre and we learned about "Speaking and Communication"
- in the evening we went to the harbour and we also went into the old city to see how Southampton is and to get some impressions. As a result we think that Southampton is a marvellous city with some nice shopping centres and a beautiful sea.

2. day:
- at the beginning of this day we were in the language center to search for information about the NHS; this was a very good task, due to the fact that when you have to look after something by your own, the learning effect is much better; another very positive effect of this lession was, that we received some important facts for our presentation/project
- afterwards we had a presentation about "Housing in Southampton" with Barbara Compton; We learned, that Southampton is nowadays a growing city and such developments cause not only positive also negative effects. E.g. often the people do not have enough money for a flat or a house, in this case the organisation "Southampton City Council" sustains the people.
-the second presentation at this morning was about the "Atlantic Housing Association" and this organisation also concentrates on the same problems how "Southampton City Council", but with a wider area.
-after the lunch we had two lessons "Speaking and Communication" and two lessons "Business English".

3. day:
- as we mentioned yesterday, at wednesday we visited the "Western Community Hospital" in the whole morning;
- afterwards we had a lesson in the language centre with Mike and than we had Business English with Kevin; Kevin talked with us about "Management Styles", where we had to make different task from the book.

4. day:
- we began this day with the language centre, where we had the time to work on our projects.
- afterwards we had "Speaking and Communication" with Peter, where we got some information about the "Register use in English"; this was a very interesting and funny lesson because as foreigner you use often words with a wrong meaning; we had the chance to test our knowledges in a game.
- in the afternoon we had a little freetime to work for our project, or we also had the possibility to go shopping.

5. day:
- in the morning our lession started with Carolyn; Carolyn gave us the task to make a marketing strategy for a NPO with 3 different possibilities, namely the "National Trust", "St. John's Ambulance" and our topic "Macmillan Cancer Support". We had to make a contract with a profit organisation, which should sustain our NPO.
- afterwards we had the nice woman Trish; in her session we talked about "male and female bosses" and which one's we prefer more.
-in the afternoon we travelled to the organisation "Surestart"; there we had a walk-around and a very interesting and marvellous presentation with one of the "Dad Workers"; "Dad Workers" try to indrotuce the men into the familiy life and they sustain the "Dad's" with their new and difficult tasks.

Summing up,

Our first week was very interesting and full of information! Firstly, we learned a lot about the health care in England, mainly about the NHS. This information was very important for our project, due to the fact that our task is called “NHS – Management & Funding”. For our project also the visit of the “Western Community Hospital” had importance because there we had 3 presentations with 4 different people.

This visit was split up into the NHS Presentation with Dr. David Paynton, the Presentation about the Walk in Centres in the UK with Sheila Brooke, the Presentation about the Community Hospitals with Fiona Baldwin and Judith May. We also had enough time to ask questions and we also received coffee and cookies. The people there were very friendly and helpfully. For us it was a marvellous excursion and we learned a lot.

Hello,

super Andrea, I saw that you made everything alright! That is nice because now we can show the world what is going on in Southhampton!

Tomorrow we will make an excursion to Salisbury! There we will visit an organisation and afterwards we will have enough freetime to explore the city! Hopefully there are some nice and cheap shops to buy some marvellous presents!

How it was we will tell you tomorrow!

Hello!!!Today the sun is shining and we had a fantastic day!We went to a big shopping center and bought a lot of things. Afterwards Nicole and I went to the "Maritime Museum" of Southampton. We saw a lot of things of the famous ship "Titanic" and were very impressed.
But now we are very tired, because we went out on Friday and Saturday and the whole weekend was very intensive. Now I wish you a nice afternoon!Lovely greetings!

hi everybody

now, we are so exausted because today we travelled to Lymington to a special market town. Lots of small markets were along the shoppingstreet, so we had plenty of opportunties to buy sth. for us or for our friends. Although we had seen this wonderful market, we found a unique shop were lots and lots of cards can be bought. In this small shop we stayed nearly one hour, because this cards were soo funny that we splitted one's side laughing. After that we travelled back to Southampton and enjoyed a wonderful cappuccino in Southampton's Park. Now, we are looking forward to the creativ meal that Christiane has prepared for us.

good evening everybody!
the first week is over, and we have been busy all the time.
this morning we had lessons as usuall and on the afternoon we went to the SURE Centre, an organisations who cares for parents and their children. we all were very impressed by this institution because this one in southampton is the most succesfull one. they have a special focus on the relationship between dads and their children and try to include fathers in the education as much as possible.
so much about that.... its friday evening, the weekend is waiting....

hi boys and girls,

We are four students from the MCI namely Eva, Christiane, Andrea and Nicole. Now, we are staying for the next two weeks in Southampton to improve our english knowledges.

On Sunday, we arrived in the late afternoon, and we had some troubles to find our accomodation. But finally, all troubles were blowed away and we all were happy to have a comfortable bed.

On monday we enjoyed our first visit at the university and the charme of the marvellous city of Southampton. Sure, the beginning was not so easy but in the end we accustomed to the new city and to the english speaking people.

We also had the task to choose one project between different opportunities. Although the decision was not so easy due to the fact that all topics were very interesting. The result of our decision was "NHS Management & Funding".

Today we visited the Western Community Hospital, this was a very intersting excursion. We collected lots of helpful information for our project.

After this exausting day we are very tired, maybe we go to bed or in a pub ....
